Corbridge: Ancient and Modern

Corbridge is both a market town and a ruined Roman archaeological site. This post will take a look at the more modern side of Corbridge, and what the town has to often to a visitor today.

Forum Books – one of my absolute favourite places to go when I visit Corbridge is Forum Books, an independent bookshop located in what I think was probably an old chapel. The shop entrance is situated directly across from the old Pele Tower (which is now a micro-brewery). Forum Books also has sister shops in Whitley Bay and Alnwick.
Top Corbridge Tip: By some books from Forum Books and then head over to the Pele Tower to drink local beer whilst getting stuck into your new read. Sounds like a great way to spend an afternoon to me…

Grant’s Bakery – If you ever need an excuse to buy cake or pies, then Grant’s bakery gives you one. The display in Grant’s is temptation made real. They actually won Best Craft Bakery in 2020 and when you enter the shop, you can definitely see why! Whenever I stay around and about, I always go to Grant’s to get pies for at least one dinnertime whilst there.

Vintage At The Tower – One of my favourite vintage/pre-loved shops to go and have a mooch around. This not-so-little shop, again right near the Pele Tower, has a great array of clothes, jewellery and accessories to take a look at. From a personal perspective, I love the fact they have an array of clip-on earrings. I love wearing earrings, but can’t because of allergies, so clip-ons are an absolute must! The Vintage ones available in this shop are awesome, and I love having a browse for some new ones.

Pele Tower Pub – Mentioned above in this post, this is a pub and a microbrewery in the setting of a fourteenth century Pele Tower. The tower was built in the early fourteenth century as part of a defensive network against border raids from over the border in Scotland. Now it’s just a place to get a beer (or something else, that’s not all they sell!) and enjoy a drink, sitting in a beautiful historic venue.

Corbridge is a beautiful town to spend time wandering around and seeing the unique things that the town has to offer. But what would Corbridge have offered a visitor in c.200AD? What did the town look like in Roman Britain? Part Two of this post will explore that aspect of Corbridge…
